As the director of “El Silbido del Cañaduzal,” this project is deeply meaningful to me. The story of Christian and Gustavo, two boys trapped in a cañaduzal in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, is not only a story of horror and survival, but also a reflection on vulnerability and courage in the darkest of times. From the beginning, I wanted to explore how fear and desperation can bring out the best and the worst in us. Gustavo, with his insecurity and overprotectiveness, represents many children who, although surrounded by love, lack the self-confidence to face the world. Christian, on the other hand, symbolizes the courage and resilience born of the freedom and independence that often comes with a lack of parental supervision. The figure of Ivan is the axis of terror in our story. His double life as a simple ice cream vendor and a ruthless torturer is a reflection of the duality present in many seemingly innocent figures. Ivan is not only a character, but a representation of the horrors that can hide behind the most everyday facades. My goal was to create an antagonist that not only terrifies by his actions, but also by his ability to manipulate and deceive. I am a lover of horror and slasher films, and I felt the need to use one of the characters from Colombian history to create a real monster like Ivan. This follows my obsession with horror and these themes, and allowed me to bring to life a figure that not only terrifies, but is also rooted in our reality and folklore. During the development of this short film, I have been aware of the importance of treating these issues with the respect and seriousness they deserve. Child disappearances and abuses are real tragedies, and although our story is fictional, it is intended to honor the memory of those who have suffered similar injustices. I want to thank the entire team that has worked tirelessly to bring this story to life. Each has contributed something unique and valuable, and without their dedication, “El Silbido del Cañaduzal” would not have been possible. I also thank the viewers for their time and attention; I hope this film will impact them and make them reflect on the fragility of innocence and the strength of the human spirit.
